Getting Started in Healthy Retail Assessment

Friday, March 18, 2016 | 8:00 am - 3:45 pm

American Lung Association (ALA) St. Paul Office
490 Concordia Ave
St. Paul, MN 55103
(free parking)

Registration Deadline: Wednesday, February 3, 2016 (Space is limited)

Note: Please be prepared to indicate the county and types of stores/restaurants you plan to audit when you register.

Cost: Registration is free and lunch included.

Audience: (101 or 102 levels) The primary audience for this training are Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) and Community Wellness Grant (CWG) grantees who have done, or plan to do work to improve healthy food availability and promotion in corner stores, grocery stores and restaurants. Please note, there are a limited number of spaces. If we don’t have space for all interested grantees, preference will be given to those who have integrated this work into their 2016 work plans.

Purpose: The training has been created to bring together local grantees to learn the basics of how to assess and improve the food environment in corner stores, grocery stores and restaurants. Together grantees will solidify their understanding of how the food environment can influence healthy and unhealthy food choices, how to assess retail food environments utilizing a new software tool available to them (Store Audit Center), and how to best use this data to activate community-driven change. Due to the focus on use of the software tool, we encourage you to send the staff person most likely to coordinate the audits and use the Store Audit Center.

Learning Objectives:
1.  Discuss key research findings regarding the food retail environment and explain how the retail environment affects public health.
2.  Gain skills to utilize the Store Audit Center to project manage, conduct audits, generate reports, and assist in planning.
3.  Understand the business needs of restaurants and store owners to engage and establish a mutually beneficial partnership.
4.  Gain insights on how the data can be used to support community and policy change efforts.

Technology Requirements:
It is important that each grantee brings a Wi-Fi-enabled laptop. It would be ideal if everyone could bring a laptop, but only one per grantee is required. This will allow for hands-on practice with the software tools.

Also, we have requested your non-government email account in the registration process, as we sometimes have difficulties when sending emails to these types of email accounts. To ensure you are able to practice with the store audit center software tool during the training, please plan to bring a mobile device or tablet that is linked with your non-government email address.

Pre-Work:
When you register, you will be asked to indicate the types of sites you plan to audit (corner stores, grocery stores, or restaurants: fast food, sit-down, fast-casual) and identify the county you wish to assess.

Additional information will be sent prior to the training.
