EurekaFacts, a local research company, on behalf of the National Center for Education Statistics, or NCES, part of the U.S. Department of Education.

NCES is looking for students in 4th and 8th grades (during the 2021–22 or 2022-23 school year) to help us test new computer-delivered Reading or Mathematics questions. These questions will be part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test. Student participation and feedback are important in helping us understand how best to assess students’ skills in Reading and Mathematics.
The study will be conducted in both group tryout sessions and individual interview sessions. These sessions will explore how students work through sample Reading or Mathematics questions to ensure that they are clear and understandable to a broad range of students.
The voluntary research sessions will last no more than 60 to 90 minutes. There will be more than one researcher present during each session. There are two types of sessions in which students can participate.

Cognitive Interviews: EurekaFacts researchers will interview students individually. During each session, students will be asked to answer Mathematics questions on a tablet computer. Participation may be in person (with students located within traveling distance to Rockville, MD) or virtually.

Cognitive Tryouts: The tryout sessions will explore how students work through Reading or mathematics test questions on a tablet computer. We want to ensure that the questions are clear and understandable to a broad range of students. Participation in the group tryout sessions will be in person.

If selected to participate, students will receive a $25 or $50 gift card (from a major credit card company) to thank them for their time. In addition, if transportation to the session site is involved, the student’s parent/legal guardian will also receive a $25 or $40 gift card as a thank-you for the time spent bringing his or her child to and from the interview site. If virtual participation is chosen, the student’s parent/legal guardian will receive a $15or $25 gift card as a thank-you for helping facilitate the student’s participation and setting up for the session. These may be combined into one $40 or $50 or $75 or $90 gift card if the same email address is provided for both gift cards.

The sessions will take place throughout the United States at a location near you and can be scheduled at your convenience. If a group session, it will be scheduled at a date and time convenient for the largest number of participants.

EurekaFacts staff may record video and take notes about students’ reactions to these questions to revise and refine test content. Participants’ screen activity may also be captured and used for analysis. NCES simply wants to know how students would answer the questions if they were to be included on an actual NAEP assessment.
Students will be assigned a unique student identifier (ID), and their names will not be linked to their answers. All of the information provided by your child may be used only for statistical purposes and may not be disclosed, or used, in identifiable form for any other purpose except as required by law.

These research sessions are an important stage of the NAEP test-development process. The feedback students provide can help NCES evaluate the test questions to create the best test possible.
