Thank you for your interest in serving as a member of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) scoring staff! Positions are available for scoring National Board Certification and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) assessments.

Assessors work in an office environment (or home office), evaluating National Board portfolio submissions or constructed response exercises according to rubrics that are accompanied by training exemplars drawn from the work of real National Board candidates. After reviewing benchmarks and completing practice scoring, assessors must qualify in order to begin scoring live candidate work.

National Board assessors are licensed educators who have at least three years of Pre-K through 12th grade teaching or school counseling experience. After successfully completing training, assessors score candidate responses to portfolios or constructed response exercises designed to collect standards-based evidence of accomplished teaching practice. Training and scoring take place in June and July each summer.

National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) are automatically considered to score the National Board’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) assessment, which is scored in July each year. MOC assessors may only work in their original certificate area, just as NBCTs may only apply to maintain in their original certificate area. MOC assessors may only score MOC during annual cycles when they are not submitting an MOC portfolio. However, NBCTs may score certification submissions during all cycles.

Please be aware that all National Board scoring positions require work on a fixed schedule from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in a specified time zone. Each offer letter specifies the scoring site or time zone for the appropriate component. Starting approximately February 1st each year, you can view tentative schedules and scoring locations offered across National Board certificate areas. National Board positions are offered for specific date ranges, and scoring personnel are expected to commit to working every weekday throughout the duration of the scoring window, excepting holidays.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Complete training process successfully and be approved to continue to live scoring
  • Evaluate portfolio submissions or constructed response exercises in a reliable manner and score according to National Board rubrics and standards
  • Complete bias-prevention training and commit to applying the scoring guide according to National Board requirements
  • Commit to working the full duration of the project
  • Meet rate and reliability requirements established for National Board scoring
