Development of Coaches Survey

Common Core Questionnaire
Development of Coaches Research Collaborative in cooperation with the Society for Psychotherapy Research Collaborative Research Network
The Development of Coaches Research Collaborative (DCRC) is an open, independent network of coaches formed to study the sources and patterns of professional development among coaches. We ask coaches of all professional backgrounds to join us by responding to this survey, and invite colleagues interested in research to join in DCRC.

Our questionnaire is based on one devised by the Collaborative Research Network of the Society for Psychotherapy Research in their international study of development in professional psychotherapists described in Orlinsky & Rønnestad (2005), How Psychotherapists Develop. Our use of questions resembling those in their Development of Psychotherapists Common Core Questionnaire enables us to study varied aspects of coaches’ development and also to compare these with the experiences of members of another profession.

In adapting the questionnaire, we have drawn on our own experiences as coaches to ask questions that we hope will seem meaningful and relevant to you. Most of the questions can be answered quickly by checking or circling the response alternatives that most closely reflect your own experience.

The core questions are marked with an asterisk (*) . We have done this to allow respondents to control the amount of time required to complete the core questions. Please answer all the questions you can, including as many of the optional items as possible. Answering the additional items provides depth and detail to the data. You may find these questions offer a useful opportunity to reflect on your coaching career. If any seem difficult to answer exactly, give your best estimate and continue. To ensure confidentiality, the questionnaire is completed anonymously. Information you provide will be used only for research purposes. Thank you for participating!

Preparing for the Survey (Important)
Please be aware that this is not a simple “5 minute” survey. Research questionnaires are generally more lengthy than simple surveys. Plan on allocating at least 30-45 minutes for this questionnaire.

Do I have to take the questionnaire all at once, or can I break it up into multiple "sittings"?
Breaking it up into multiple sittings is a great strategy. For example, you could break it up into 15 minute intervals and spread it across 2-3 days if you needed to. If you wish to take a break at any point, simply click the SAVE AND CONTINUE LATER button at the bottom of the screen. Upon doing this, you will be taken to a screen with a link you can use to access the survey later at the same point you left off. You can copy the link and paste it in an email to send to yourself, write it down or right click on it and Add to Favorites. This link can be used from any computer.

Why is it worth my time to do this?
You will benefit in two ways:
* You can sign up to receive the report findings from this study when it becomes available -- FREE! The report will identify which modes of development have been found to be the most effective. These findings help you become a more effective coach in the shortest amount of time! (Sign-up instructions for getting the report free are provided on the last page of this questionnaire).
* It will increase the credibility of the coaching profession. The more effective we are as a profession, the greater the demand will be for our services. "A rising tide lifts all ships".

Will my responses be anonymous?
There are several opportunities in the beginning and end of the survey for you to provide your e-mail address and contact information. If you wish to receive the report findings or to take part in a follow-up survey, you will need to provide your e-mail address. However, if you do provide this information at either opportunity, please be assured you can answer all questions openly. Findings from this study will only be reported in aggregate.
